Weekly Happenings Around Houston – Nov 7th – 13th

So many events- so little time! Has anyone figured out how to clone themselves yet? Every week I see so many events that look interesting or fun and I hope to make it to them, but more often than not, life gets in the way. Ms. Janet was lucky enough this past weekend to make it to the Menil Drawing Institute Community Celebration. She raved about the architecture of the building- which is designed to be like an origami object- and the beautiful landscaping. On exhibit at the museum is work by Jasper Johns- an artist we have studied before in our Masters Series classes. She was enamored by Ruth Asawa’s undulating wire sculpture Untitled (Hanging Six-Lobed, Discontinuous Surface with an Interlocked Top Section)(1956) hanging from the ceiling. It’s a very intricate wire sculpture that almost looks like a drawing. She said it was a perfect day, and as much as she enjoyed the museum, she also liked seeing people out and enjoying the grounds- there were people out sketching, pincnicing, filling the sidewalks with chalk art, and having a great time. I’m hoping she’ll write her own blog post with more details- she tells the story better than I do!

I changed up the formatting of the weekly happenings a little bit this week. There were so many events going on, that you would end up scrolling for days, so I thought it would be easier to roll up the events under each day, and then you can pick on the day you’re looking for something to do and see what’s going on. Hopefully this is easier for everyone, especially those on their mobile devices.

Like I said, this week there is so much going on- from our Fall Wreath acrylic painting workshop and our Friday Night Fun to Santa arriving at Bass Pro Shops and the tree lighting at the Galleria. If you’re wanting to get some early holiday shopping done, the Nutcracker Market is this weekend- but if you don’t want to fight the crowds, there are several smaller art and crafts markets happening as well. For those who love riding bikes, there’s the BCO Grafitti Art & Bike Ride, which looks like a great ride. The Wobble before you Gobble is happening Saturday at Pearland Town Center. We’ll be out there in the Kids Zone with an art activity, so if you’re in the area, stop by to get creative with us and to tell us hi!  While you’re there, enter our raffle to win a $30 gift certificate to the studio!

Enjoy your week!

“Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market has become the signature holiday fundraising shopping event in Texas that kicks off all the holiday shopping frenzy! It is a one-stop giant pop-up shop featuring over 280 merchants, offering unique items for everyone, including home décor, gourmet food, clothing, toys, novelties, ornaments, pottery, accessories and more…just in time for your holiday shopping! It is the best way to shop and give back during the holidays, as proceeds from each admission and special event ticket that is purchased, plus 11% of all the merchandise bought, goes back to Houston Ballet Foundation.
After 37 years, the Nutcracker Market has become a loyal tradition for many families and a fun must-have experience for any and all Nutcracker Market shoppers who are on the lookout for unique and meaningful gifts and who are ready to start the holiday season!
The 2018 Nutcracker Market, chaired by Wendy Wilkins Burks, is themed “Cruising into Christmas’” and with the strong support of the Nutcracker Market committee chairmen, generous donors, loyal shoppers, long-time sponsors and underwriters, and our 1,000+ volunteers, we know the 2018 Nutcracker Market will be one of our best ever!”
