There are good holiday movie nights this weekend between The Polar Express at Levy Park and Elf showing a couple of different places. “Galveston Island’s most famous holiday event recreates the Victorian London of Charles Dickens for an entire weekend in December. Characters from Dickens novels walk the streets and food and entertainment fill the area with sights and smells that take you back to another era.
Presented by the Galveston Historical Foundation, Dickens on The Strand will take you and your family on an enchanted journey through history as a bustling 19th Century cityscape comes to life. For an entire weekend, hundreds of costumed vendors and performers will provide a look at the pomp and pageantry of the British Empire, at a time when commercial and cultural ties provided a strong connection between London and Texas’ largest and richest city.
Centered in Galveston’s The Strand National Historic Landmark District, located approximately one hour south of downtown Houston, the family festival will include parades, non-stop entertainment on the festival’s stages, plus strolling carolers and roving street musicians, bagpipers and entertainers. Additionally, costumed vendors peddle their wares from street stalls and rolling carts laden with tasty culinary delights and Victorian-inspired crafts, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations and gift items.
Adult tickets purchased at the gate are $12, children ages 7-12 are $6, and children under 7 are free. Visitors to the festival dressed in Victorian-era costumes will be admitted for half-price at the gate.”

LOOP Houston | 8AM-11PM Nov. 30th through Jan. 6th
Avenida Houston | 1002 Avenida de las Americas, Houston, Texas 77010
“Bring the family down to Avenida Houston, Downtown’s center for entertainment and enjoy our new, interactive art installation!
As always, this event is FREE and open to the public so don’t worry about tickets.
LOOP
The work is inspired by the zoetrope, an optical toy invented in the 19th century. Loop is a cross between a music box, a zoetrope and a railway handcar. The retro-futuristic machine, more than two meters in diameter, creates animated fairy-tale Loops. Through the combined efforts of members of the public working the hand lever, the image cylinder lights up and creates the illusion of motion in the drawings. The black and white images, tinted through a strobe effect, recall the earliest movies and are visible inside the cylinder as well as outside it, so that they can be watched from close up or far away. The speed at which the images fly by, the frequency at which the light flickers and the rhythm of the audio composition are all directly related to the pace set by the participants, who can be of any age. Loop was first presented as part of the 7th edition of Luminothérapie, in 2016-2017, at the Place des Festivals in the Quartier des Spectacles in Montreal.”
